At first it looked an Italian web design firm. But, I was only identifying specific words like “oferta”, “pagina” and “programare”. And they weren’t even spelling most of Italian right. I thought, “Man some really illiterate people are running the show here — nothing to see. Just drop it from the index and move on.”

But I was intrigued. What they were saying on the site made sense, but it was like reading some dialect of Italian - “Serviciile noastre sunt optimizate…” Could that be “Nostri servizi sone ottimizati”? I’m not good at dialects, and this site doesn’t look like it’s written in Spanish or Portuguese … I’m wondering if this is Romanian?

Apparently this is Romanian — you can see from their contact page that they have an address in Romania.

I never knew Italian and Romanian were so close. Well, if anyone needs web design in Romania or Romanian, try out Site Construct Web Design — the site looks good. I just can’t tell you how informative it is.

Web business directories are some of the most highly trafficked websites on the Internet. Certainly the largest and best known of these directories would be Yahoo.com and The Open Directory Project (aka “DMOZ”). People searching for products and services on these directories are pre-qualified and, if they click on your link, already interested in what you have to offer.

There is a key difference between search engines and web directories. Search engines attempt to automatically divine what searchers are looking for, and they do it quite effectively. If a searcher looks to a web directory, though, it is because someone, the web directory editor(s), has already classified and vetted the sites in the directory. Almost no web directory uses robot programs and automated algorithms that can be scammed by unscrupulous entrepreneurs attempting to game the system.

The web directory’s human element can lead to higher quality listings because human editors immediately see subtleties that even the most sophisticated program would have trouble identifying. This human factor is also what gives the sites the higher authority ranking (as expressed through Google’s Page Ranking, or PR) that many established web business directories enjoy.

In addition to the pre-qualified traffic a web directory listing will give you, a certain amount of ranking authority will be conferred upon your site simply based on your link being in the directory. It’s even better if you do not have a reciprocal link to the web directory — web directories should be able to stand on their own and not require cheesy reciprocal links to build up their own page rankings.

1. I can usually tell a bad website in less than ten seconds, but deciding if a site is good enough to include (aka bookmarkable) can take a couple of minutes.
2. People are submitting their sites multiple times. This may be the result of a bug in the directory submission software people are using, a bug in the Link Exchange plugin I’m using, or simple over-zealousness of the part of the site-submitters.
3. People don’t understand that if I can’t review a site because it’s in a foreign language like Russian or Chinese, I can’t include it in the directory.
4. Submitters are either lazy or incapable of writing coherent copy. Here’s a clue for submitters: the description you submit for your site is the description that will be displayed in the bookmarkables.com directory — if you don’t write a compelling description that could conceivably entice someone to visit your site, I’m not including it in the directory. If you can’t fit your description in the space provided (~1500 characters), please use the contact form and supply the relevant information there. Don’t just list a bunch of keywords!
