I’ve now been accepting submissions to the bookmarkables.com directory for a couple of days now and I have some observations.
- I can usually tell a bad website in less than ten seconds, but deciding if a site is good enough to include (aka bookmarkable) can take a couple of minutes.
- People are submitting their sites multiple times. This may be the result of a bug in the directory submission software people are using, a bug in the Link Exchange plugin I’m using, or simple over-zealousness of the part of the site-submitters.
- People don’t understand that if I can’t review a site because it’s in a foreign language like Russian or Chinese, I can’t include it in the directory.
- Submitters are either lazy or incapable of writing coherent copy. Here’s a clue for submitters: the description you submit for your site is the description that will be displayed in the bookmarkables.com directory — if you don’t write a compelling description that could conceivably entice someone to visit your site, I’m not including it in the directory. If you can’t fit your description in the space provided (~1500 characters), please use the contact form and supply the relevant information there. Don’t just list a bunch of keywords!
So, that’s the report for how the directory is growing so far. Note that reciprocal links are not required from included sites — reciprocal links are just cheesy and put into question my objectivity as the manager of this directory.
